HANDCRAFTED IN CALIFORNIA
Chanee Vijay designs textiles from her home studio in Manhattan Beach, California where she lives with her husband and dogs. After taking a year off to move cross-country and remodel their new home, her latest textiles collection gradually came to life. The collection is a departure from her earlier screen printed work. It is still hand printed, but with a new hand-dyed technique (which uses very little water), every throw pillow, wall hanging and bed cover is one of a kind.
In 2014, Chanee partnered with her mother to create the Plains collection. It is at its essence, plain - made from modest yet beautiful organic European hemp. Inspired by her mother's humble Midwest origins, Chanee designed a functional, durable and refined collection of aprons, napkins and hand towels for the natural modern home.
The 2013 Collection reflects her love for the geometric and historic patterns in her former city of Philadelphia. Terrain carried her Holiday 2013 table linen collection, and her pillow designs were offered at Schoolhouse Electric - a design collaboration for their Spring 2014 collection. The designs from Chanee's 2012 pillow collection were influenced by her travels across southern India (where she was married in 2007).
Chanee's designs have been seen in national and international publications and blogs like Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset Magazine, Lonny Magazine, Sweet Paul Magazine, DIY Magazine, Style at Home, NY Times, Design*Sponge, Remodelista, Design Milk, Apartment Therapy, and Fete Press, and on the Nate Berkus show. Her textiles have been featured at West Elm in Charlotte and Philadelphia, Schoolhouse Electric Co., Terrain, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance.
Specializing in surface pattern design, Chanee developed her signature style of painting her designs on screens as well as carving them into blocks, and hand printing on organic hemp. For Chanee, the 'how' is just as important as the design. She subscribes to a slow design philosophy, so each hand-printed piece is crafted with regard for health, modern life and the environment. Chanee’s textiles start with beautifully woven and organically-grown European hemp, which is free of bleach, dioxins, formaldehyde, caustic acids, fire retardants, and wrinkle-proofing chemicals. She prints with water-based, solvent-free textile inks that meet the strictest environmental standards, -free of CFCs, HCFCs, volatile solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons. Unlike other inks (e.g. Plastisols) her inks are also PVC and Phthalate free.
