The Ancient Repetitions

European Hemp

Textile Art

Chanee's textile art draws on her regard for landforms and faults with materials and techniques collected after a decade of textile design and production. Starting with European hemp offcuts, Chanee plays with tonality, often overdyeing each piece to bring mood and character to the fabric. Her attentiveness to the interactions among forms reinforces the arrangement’s imperfect lines. The composition is realized by stitching and sculpting the hemp together to create movement and texture with layers and raw exposed seams. The edges coalesce into a singular form once pasted onto the wood panel.

Hand-Painted By The Yard

European Hemp

European hemp has a nubby, relaxed texture. Chanee's painting technique creates a watercolor effect producing unique variations in borders, saturation and shading, and highlighting the hemp's natural character with a wash of subtle color. Fibers grown in Europe and processed without toxins, naturally, in the traditional European method. This lends itself to a beautifully woven fiber with an antique linen-like character. Hemp is naturally antimicrobial, hypoallergenic and UV protected. The fabric begins with a stiff, crisp hand but continues to soften beautifully with each wash.

Hand-painted by Chanee with water-based and solvent-free ink. Made to order and will ship within 1-3 weeks of order depending on quantity.

Hand-Painted Watercolor Pillows

RH Collection

Hand painted in watercolor hues inspired by the Pacific Ocean, this hemp pillow collection is a work of textile art. Artisan Chanee Vijay devotes meticulous attention to each length of fabric, working with the hemp's rich natural texture as she brushes on the water-based tints and metallic accents. Organic variations in the shading and borders, including fillets of visible raw hemp, speak to the artist's hand and the character of the weave.

Sold exclusively at RH.

DYED PILLOW COLLECTION

This collection allowed Chanee to design in the moment, hand to fabric - rather than follow her former strict screen printing script. The movements are jagged and unpredictable. Embracing the flaws and allowing the dyes to bleed beyond set borders. Muted hues found in the early light, and in the waves of the Pacific on a cloudy day. Designed and produced by Chanee in her Manhattan Beach, California studio.

2014

The Plains Collection

In 2014, Chanee partnered with her mother to create the Plains collection. It is at its essence, plain - made from modest yet beautiful organic French hemp. Inspired by her mother's humble Midwest origins, Chanee designed a functional, durable and refined collection of aprons, napkins and hand towels for the  relaxed modern lifestyle.

Hand Pulled ScreenPrints

This screen printed pillow collection was influenced by Chanee's travels across southern India where she was married in 2007. The 2013 Collection reflects her love for the geometric and historic patterns in her former city of Philadelphia.
